Corruption in Project Idea


•    Project idea is conceived elsewhere and by others
•    Locals i.e. would be beneficiaries are not involved – before, during or after conception

•    Specifications not applied or unjustifiably varied

1. What is Corruption?
The word “corruption” comes from a Latin verb “Corruptus” which means (to break), it literally means broken object. Corruption is the breakdown of ethical and moral value, systems and institutions of governance, societal traditions and personal behaviour.
Longman’s Dictionary defines it as: -
–    Impairment of integrity, virtue or moral principle; depravity
–    Decay, decomposition
–    Inducement to do wrong by unlawful or improper means esp. bribery...”
World Bank/UN describes corruption as the abuse of power for personal gain or for the benefit of a group of people
Corruption is also:-
•    Abuse of socially acceptable norms
•    Evil/immoral conduct
•    Misuse/abuse of authority
•    Misuse/abuse of public office
•    Abuse of public power

2. What causes corruption?
•    Bad governance

•    Political patronage
•    Lack of political will
•    Lack of transparency and accountability

3. How does corruption manifest itself?
•    Bribery

•    Falsification

4. What actions can I take against Corruption?
•    Refusing to participate in corruption – Citizens must shun corruption, not participate in any practice that promotes corruption and refuse to benefit from corrupt proceeds - Refuse to give and receive!
•    Reporting corrupt acts - people must report corruption every time they encounter it.
•    Whistle blowing - corruption takes place all around us – workmates, friends, relatives. We must accept to blow the whistle when a corrupt activity is suspected.
•    Encouraging bravery - Corruption thrives where people are afraid or disinterested in reporting corruption.  They must demonstrate bravery and patriotism.
•    Adherence to laws and regulations – all Citizens must adhere to the laws and regulations governing the conduct of public affairs
•    Transparency and accountability - corruption cannot survive where there is transparency and accountability. Citizens must demand from those in authority that they conduct public business transparently and remain accountable at all times
•    Attitudinal change – the society should change from that of idolizing corrupt individuals
•    Promoting democracy - democracy gives people the opportunity to elect leaders of integrity, and should be promoted. The integrity of public institutions should also be defended.
•    Punish the corrupt - people must be made to understand that corruption is unacceptable in the society by punishing those convicted of corruption without fear or favour.
•    Culture – society needs to breed a culture that is intolerant to corruption.

5. What is my duty as a Citizens?
•    To be patriotic - patriotism makes Kenya a great nation e.g. paying taxes, fighting corruption.
•    To be a good citizen- playing an active role in making Kenya a better Country e.g. reporting corruption.
•    To earn an honest living - good Citizens must strive to earn an honest living.
•    To obey laws – those that don’t obey the laws are architects of corruption.

6. What are the excuses for indulging in Corruption?
•    If I don’t, my business will collapse
•    I was threatened
•    Everyone is doing it, why not me
•    It is time for my people to eat
•    A leader must take care of his people
•    Orders from above
