THE ANTI-CORRUPTION RADIO CAMPAIGN, 2024

The National Anti-Corruption Campaign Steering Committee (NACCSC) is established to undertake a nationwide public education, sensitization and awareness creation campaign to effect fundamental changes in the behaviour, attitudes, practices and culture of Kenyans towards corruption. Anti- corruption media campaign is one of the critical tools NACCSC uses in the campaign against corruption. In the financial year 2023/2024. NACCSC conceptualized a radio campaign program to disseminate anti-corruption messages in six languages thus Kikuyu, Kamba, Kalenjin, Somali, Kiswahili and English. NACCSC procured the service from Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) for a period of one month from the 13th May 2024 to  7th June 2024 to raise awareness about corruption, its negative impacts, and the actions citizens can take to prevent and combat it.

The campaign was conducted every MondayTuesdayWednesday and Friday on the breakfast show through the KBC radio station (Coro Fm, Mwatu Fm, Kitwek Fm, Iftin Fm, Radio Taifa and English Service. The six radio stations developed, designed and produced interactive anti corruption radio campaign programmes for a period of one (1) month guided by the Terms of Reference developed by NACCSC. The programme was an hour live transmission in six languages (Kamba, Somali, Kalenjin, Kikuyu, Kiswahili and English) transmitted consistently for four days in a week. In preparation for the live transmission of each episode the radio stations produced 4 live shows, generic promos, infomercials, radio promos related to the topic of discussion and aired them daily three days before the programme , activations and mentions ,posters with the logos of NACCSC and participating institution detailing the name, organization, photo of the guest, date and time of the programme and shared them on digital platforms to popularize the programs as shown below for a wider reach. The radio stations also provided interaction facilities between the guest and listeners which included telephone, short code, short text messages (SMS), and social media posts (WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, telegram.) NACCSC developed topics for discussions and invited stakeholders in the fight against corruption to participate.

From the feedback received during the campaign period listeners expressed enthusiasm for the campaign and sought further information on reporting mechanisms and government anti corruption efforts, recommending regular programs for better understanding and participation. High levels of public engagement and positive feedback were recorded, particularly members of the public want to know what the government was doing to reduce widespread cases that had infiltrated every sector of the society. Recommendations included securing additional funding to extend future campaigns, increasing grassroots outreach and sensitization forums, enhancing follow-up mechanisms for reported corruption cases, fostering stronger collaborations with county governments and local leaders, to provide support for the war against corruption and utilizing social media and other platforms for broader reach and engagement.
